Reset Default Apps

If you have a problem that you have tried a variety of applications and now have finder giving you a massive list of optional apps to open a file with. Or the default one is not what you want. Try the following:

  • Run lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user /Users/Shared/Applications /Applications
  • Use the More Internet prefPane

The former is found in /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support. Run without arguments to get help, but the above command resets the application list and defaults by looking in 2 different Application folders.

The latter is a preference pane plugin (note sure about Tiger support ... it runs but I don’t know if it changes the applications properly since Apple change how to register default applications). It can be found at the monkeyfood web site.
